Is AI Making Us Dumber?

Is AI Making Us Dumber?

Schools are struggling to block AI access in the classroom. Gaming, YouTube, now AI.

There has always been something that can easily distract children. Sitting down at a desk in a classroom, fluorescent lights overhead, flickering so fast our eyes can’t see it, but our brain registers it and gets exhausted.

Teachers, some who seem to hate children - why do they decide to teach? And some who are incredible.

An excellent teacher I know would always get labeled as trouble because she encouraged her kindy/year one students to take their shoes off and took them out onto a blanket under the trees in the playground to teach them. How cool is that?

Yet her view was unusual and unless you’re in a Steiner or Montessori style situation you tend to just have a teacher at the front of the class talking at you.

I don’t think many people are designed to learn like that. I think we’re more experiential and kinaesthetic learners. And our schools and universities don’t seem to be able to adopt to things fast. The bigger an establishment is, the slower it seems to go. So when this something new shows up, and the first response is to shut it out, lock the doors….

AI is just a tool - at this stage anyway, and what a tool it is!

I understand the fear of this new thing. But blocking a tool doesn't teach anyone how to use it well. It just delays the moments they have to learn. Remember when coding was going to be the next big thing? Literally coders are using AI to code now…. The amount of people building businesses by being early adopters of AI, there is a HUGE opportunity right now. And our young people are not even being encouraged to play with it.

I’m lucky, years ago I had a business coach who was into tech. I had an Open AI account in 2022, that feels like a lifetime ago in AI terms. I used it and an AI software called Jasper to help me consolidate my thoughts into written content. And I didn't block it. I leaned in. Not systematically or in a straight line, but I’ve been using it and am very comfortable with it after using AI in my business for years now.

At first it was definitely slow. Up and down, some wins, some things that went nowhere. But I stuck with it, and now it's second nature. Every task that lands on my desk, I think - Can AI do this for me? Can this be a scheduled task, a skill, something that runs without a human in the equation at all?

This is how I’m implementing my business model of only working four days a week 9-3pm.

The classroom problem isn't AI

Teachers are worried that children will cheat with AI. If a student can pass a class by typing the assignment into a chatbot, I don’t think that's a cheating problem. That's a problem with the engagement in the classroom and it's the same one we all face these days, especially in business - getting the engagement of our client. Especially if we’re trying to find our people organically on social media.

My daughter's uni gave them an assignment. The homework task was to analyse a study using AI, then analyse it yourself, and explain the differences. I thought that was very clever. Teaching students to incorporate the tools and not forget to think alongside it, to notice where it gets things wrong, where it misses nuance, where their own judgement adds something to the analysis that the AI can't.

That's the skill of using AI, not avoiding it. Discernment.

Imagine what you could build to make a class more interesting, yet they’re still giving dry lectures and past papers as ways to teach.

The learning curve for AI seems easy, you just chat to it - right? But it’s not so simple, that kind of approach will get you simple answers, but if you want to be blown away, you need to know how to engage with it as a tool, to get the best out of it, and of course it just keeps changing, and if you’re anything like me, you may wonder what something so powerful can do in the wrong hands.

My first instinct on that front was to dive in deep! More good people, more shaman, more lightworkers working with the tools, the more it could make its own assessments between good people and evil intent.

And we've been here before

AI is being touted as a time saver, it makes me feel so capable, that there is nothing I can’t do in my business anymore.

But we built dishwashers and washing machines to save us time. And somehow, we're busier than we've ever been.

Every piece of technology that promises to free us up has a way of filling that freed up space with more. More output. More expectation. More noise.

AI will do exactly the same thing if you let it. It won't automatically liberate you just because it's powerful.

So isn't it how we use it

I don't ask AI to do my thinking for me. I ask it to do the parts that don’t involve thinking - it’s my grunt worker. The admin. The repetition. The tasks that used to take up my day before I even got to the work that actually needed my input, or things I didn’t know how to do and would have to employ someone to do for me.

That's the difference between being liberated by it and being chained to it. I love my AI tools, but it takes constant discernment to ensure that I am still in every part of my business where I’m needed. I don’t need to edit a video, but I need to make sure it sounds like me and what I would say after it’s been done.

I don’t need to build a database that keeps track of all of the ingredients I have in my office, with where I bought them from, the price I paid, and have it interconnect with my product formulas so that I get pinged when I need to order ingredients so that a product can remain in stock….

But AI can’t replace my thoughts, the vibrational coding that I put into my products, the thoughts I have around putting pieces of research together to form my philosophies around life, longevity, liberty and radiance.

I think AI has made me more sophisticated in my business.

But tell me, do you think I making you smarter or lazier?

What do you think about our children using AI?
