Types of Energy Healing: A Practical Guide for Beginners
If you are new to energy healing, it can feel like a whole new language.
Reiki. Chakras. Sound healing. Cacao. Essential oils. Somatic release. Shamanic healing. Intuitive work. Nervous system support.
It can sound beautiful, but also a little overwhelming.
So let’s make it simple.
Energy healing is a broad term for practices that support the body, mind, emotions and spirit by working with the subtle layers of your system.
Some people come to energy healing because they feel stressed, flat, disconnected, sensitive, exhausted, stuck, or ready for change. Others come because they are moving through a life transition and want support that feels deeper than just talking things through.
Energy healing is about helping you reconnect with the parts of you that may have become buried under responsibility, stress, old stories, grief, or simply the pace of everyday life.
Below are some of the most common types of energy healing, and how to know what might be right for you.
1. Reiki
Reiki is one of the most well-known forms of energy healing.
It is a gentle Japanese practice where the practitioner channels universal life force energy through their hands. A Reiki session may involve hands lightly placed on or above the body, depending on the practitioner and the client’s comfort.
People often describe Reiki as calming, warm, peaceful or deeply restorative. Some feel sensations in the body, some see colours or images, some feel emotional release, and others simply feel quiet for the first time in a long time.
Reiki can be supportive if you are feeling:
Overwhelmed or emotionally stretched
Disconnected from your body
Tired but wired
In a period of transition
In need of quiet, grounding support
Reiki is often a beautiful starting point because it does not require you to explain anything, it's just the practitioner tuning in.
2. Chakra Healing
Chakra healing works with the body’s energetic centres.
The basic chakras are often understood as seven main energy centres running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each one is associated with different themes, such as safety, creativity, confidence, love, expression, intuition and connection.
When people talk about a “blocked chakra,” they are usually describing an area where energy feels stuck, depleted or overactive.
For example, someone with a lot of pressure around speaking up may feel restriction around the throat chakra. Someone who feels ungrounded, a lack of abundance or unsafe may benefit from work around the root chakra.
Chakra healing can include meditation, Reiki, visualisation, sound, breath, oils, crystals or intuitive guidance.
This type of healing can be helpful if you like having a bit of a map for what you are feeling.
3. Sound Healing
Sound healing uses vibration to support relaxation, release and energetic balance.
This may include instruments such as singing bowls, chimes, drums, tuning forks, voice or other resonant sounds. The body responds to rhythm and vibration, so sound can sometimes reach places that words cannot.
People often find sound healing helpful when their mind is very busy. Instead of trying to think your way into stillness, sound gives your body something to soften into.
Sound healing may be supportive if you:
Struggle to meditate
Feel mentally noisy or scattered
Carry tension in the body
Want a non-verbal healing experience
Feel soothed by rhythm, tone or vibration
It can be especially powerful in group spaces, where the shared field adds another layer of support.
4. Cacao Ceremony
Cacao ceremony is a heart-opening practice using ceremonial cacao as a plant ally.
Cacao has been used in sacred and communal ways for a very long time. In a modern healing context, cacao is often used to support emotional openness, reflection, connection and gentle inner listening.
A cacao ceremony may include intention setting, meditation, journaling, energy healing, sharing, sound, breath or ritual.
This is not about drinking hot chocolate and hoping for the best. It is about entering into relationship with a plant medicine in a respectful, grounded way.
Cacao can be beautiful if you are working with:
Heart healing
Self-trust
Softening after a hard season
Grief or tenderness
Creativity and reconnection
The desire to feel more present in your body
It is gentle, but that does not mean it is shallow. Sometimes the gentlest practices reach the deepest places.
5. Essential Oils and Aromatic Healing
Essential oils can support energy work through scent, ritual and nervous system anchoring.
Smell has a direct relationship with memory, emotion and the limbic system, which is one reason oils can feel so immediate. A particular oil may help you feel grounded, uplifted, comforted, clear or held.
In energy healing, oils may be used to support intention, clear the field, anchor a new state, or create a daily ritual that helps the body remember safety and presence.
For example:
Frankincense may support stillness and spiritual connection
Lavender may support softness and rest
Peppermint may support clarity
Orange may support joy and uplift
Cedarwood may support grounding
This is where Young Living can become a practical bridge. You do not need to live inside a healing room to keep supporting yourself. Oils can become part of the way you bring the work home into your everyday life.
6. Shamanic Energy Healing
Shamanic healing works with spiritual guidance, ritual, nature-based wisdom and the unseen layers of experience.
Different practitioners work in different ways, but shamanic healing may involve journeying, clearing, ancestral work, power retrieval, soul fragments, spirit allies, mesa work, or ceremonial practices.
This kind of healing can be especially powerful when something feels hard to explain through ordinary language. Sometimes we know we are holding onto something, but we do not know where it came from or why it is still with us.
Shamanic work can support people who feel:
At a threshold or initiation point
Disconnected from their own life force
Called to deeper spiritual work
Held by old patterns that feel bigger than mindset
Drawn to ceremony, ritual and earth-based healing
It is important to choose a practitioner who is grounded, ethical and respectful of the traditions and lineages they work with.
7. Intuitive Energy Healing
Intuitive energy healing is guided by what the practitioner senses in the moment.
This might include messages, images, body sensations, emotional themes, energetic patterns or symbolic information. The practitioner may combine Reiki, chakra work, spiritual guidance, oils, ritual or coaching-style reflection.
A good intuitive healer will not override your authority. They will not tell you who you are. They will offer reflections that help you recognise what already feels resonant in your own body.
This kind of session can be helpful if you feel:
Unsure what you need, but know something is shifting
Stuck between old identity and new direction
Emotionally heavy without knowing why
Ready to be witnessed in a deeper way
Curious about the patterns underneath the pattern
Intuitive healing works best when it is collaborative. The practitioner listens, but so do you.
8. Somatic and Nervous System-Based Energy Work
Some energy healing is less “mystical language” and more body-based.
Somatic work focuses on the body’s lived experience. It may include breath, movement, sensation tracking, grounding, emotional release, or gentle practices that support the nervous system.
This is relevant because many of us are not just thinking about our stresses. We are carrying it in our physical bodies.
You may know logically that you are safe, capable or allowed to rest, but your body may still be bracing. Somatic energy work helps create a bridge between what you know and what your system can actually feel.
This can be supportive if you are experiencing:
Overwhelm
Burnout
Difficulty resting
Emotional reactivity
A sense of being shut down
Feeling disconnected from your body
For many women, especially in seasons of hormonal change, midlife transition, parenting, caring or reinvention, this kind of work can be deeply stabilising.
How Do You Know Which Type of Energy Healing Is Right for You?
You do not need to know - exactly.
Start with what you are drawn to.
If you need rest, Reiki may be a beautiful place to begin.
If you feel emotionally tender, cacao may support the heart.
If you feel mentally busy, sound may help you chill.
If you want daily support, essential oils may be the bridge.
If you feel spiritually called, shamanic or intuitive work may meet you more deeply.
If your body feels overwhelmed, somatic support may help you come back to yourself.
The right practice is often the one your body feels as if it can exhale around.
What Happens in a Live Energy Healing Session?
A live session gives you the comfort of being held in real time.
You are not trying to figure it all out alone. You are witnessed. The session responds to what is present in you right at that time.
In a live session with me, the work may include energy healing, intuitive guidance, oils, ritual, nervous system support, spiritual reflection and grounded integration. The exact look of it depends on how you turn up and what your system is ready for.
The goal is to come home to yourself with more clarity, compassion, strength and capacity.
Bringing Energy Healing Into Everyday Life
Energy healing is most powerful when it is integrated into your life.
This is where simple daily rituals come in.
A few drops of essential oils before bed.
A hand on your heart before a difficult conversation.
A breath before you rip someone's head off.
A moment of cacao and journaling at the end of the day.
A pause before you abandon your boundaries again.
And I love to clear any non-beneficial energy tendrils from my person and bedroom before I go to bed.
Healing is not only what happens in a session. It is also what you practise afterwards.
That is why I love pairing live healing work with practical tools such as Young Living oils. The session can open the door, and the oils can help you build a rhythm of support at home.
A Gentle Next Step
If you are curious about energy healing, you do not need to know whether you need Reiki, chakra healing, cacao, oils, intuitive work or something else.
You can simply begin with: something in me is ready to be supported, or I need help now! Depends on your personality.
If that is where you are, you are welcome to book a live session with me.
And if you would like to begin with simple daily support at home, Young Living oils can be a beautiful way to start building your own ritual practice.
